Welcome to Memphis, birthplace of the
blues. Beale Street, from which the Beale Street Blues got
its name, is still very much a primary center of blues musicians
and a Mecca for blues lovers. The Congress of the United States
honored the blues and Beale Street by declaring Memphis Home
of the Blues.
In the 1950s, another revolution hit the world of music, - Elvis Presley,
the King, created his own version of rhythm and blues. Today, years
after his death, he is virtually idolized by thousands who flock to
Memphis to visit - or just look at - Graceland, the home of Elvis
Presley.
Music is very much a major tourist attraction in Memphis. But Memphis has
hatched many other world famous successes. Holiday Inns, long a familiar
landmark along American highways, was founded and headquartered in
Memphis.
The world famous (for other reasons) Peabody Hotel is another "you
just don't want to miss" attraction. You'll never forget the sight of
the Peabody ducks marching on their special red carpet to the strains of
a John Phillip Sousa march to the water fountain in the hotel lobby.

In our
opinion,
exit 12 of I-40 is the best exit in the Memphis area for an overnight
stop if you are passing through Memphis. Almost all the big name hotel
chains are present with facilities ranging from Red Roof to a recently
completely renovated Holiday Inn. And the room rates seem to be
consistently below those at other exits in the area.
One problem; if you are westbound, you just may find yourself embroiled
in the morning rush hour traffic - and it is very bad here. Of course, you
could depart at 6a but you will still find a lot of traffic. West Memphis
is just across the Mississippi River so you might consider a hotel
there.
If you intend to do some touring in Memphis you probably wish to include
Beale Street. If you are eastbound, take exit 1-B (exit 1-C if westbound)
and head south on US-64 to Beal Street (about 13 blocks counting the
streets on your right).
