Watson
Falls

Depending upon who
is exclaiming, Watson Falls is the 2nd, or 3rd, or 4th highest waterfall
in Oregon. Whatever the real truth is, it is about 272 feet falling in
two steps. Starting with a tiny step from a narrow crevice in the cliff
it seems to gather strength then plunges another 225 feet to the pool,
below. This is all in a sort of amphitheatre setting. For photo of Watson Falls, see: How to get there: Exit I-5 in Roseburg onto OR-138 and head east, across the river to OR-99. Here, OR-138 follows 99 north for a couple blocks and then goes east (right) again. It is about 18 miles to Glide and the North Umpqua Ranger District Office (18782 North Umpqua Hwy). Stop in, get loaded up with information - which will help increase your enjoyment of the coming sights. |
(How to get there - continued): From Glide continue east on Hwy 138 to Steamboat and Forest Road #38. This is probably where you tyurned off to view Steamboat Falls. From Forest Road #38, continue east on Hwy 130 for about 18 miles, past Toketee Falls (the community) and continue another 1.8 miles to Forest Road #34. From Forest Road #34 (where you probably turned off for Toketee Falls), continue east on Hwy 130 for 1.3 miles to Forest Road #37 (also called Fish Creek Road). Turn right onto the Forest Road and follow it about 400 yards to the parking lot and picnic area. The footpath loops up, over a bridge and back down to the parking lot, a total of about a half mile. Don't stop at the bridge because, as we found, the best place to view the falls is a little beyond it. Hotel and Motel accommodations, usually at a discount, are available in Medford (I-5 exits 30, 32 & 35), Grants Pass (exits 55 thru 61), Canyonville (exits 99 & 101) and Roseburg (exits 119 & 125). |
